WATERFRONT PARKS
Enjoy fishing, crabbing, picnicking and other recreational opportunities at all three of the island’s waterfront parks. Reserve space at any of these parks for your family gathering at 757-336-6519.
Robert N. Reed Downtown Waterfront Park, located in the heart of downtown on the Chincoteague Channel, offers a fishing pier and pavilion that serves as a venue for outdoor activities. Photo ops of our majestic sunsets, oversized LOVE chairs and rocket launches are a must. Marina facilities here include 10 transient boat slips. Call 757-894-1349 or 757-336-6519 to reserve slips. Just a short walk will lead you to the new Brianna’s Kindness Park, which offers a children’s sensory playground, adult fitness equipment, pavilion, soccer field, chess tables, and public restrooms.
Chincoteague Veterans Memorial Park is located on the Assateague Channel and provides playground equipment, basketball/ tennis courts, fishing pier, pavilion, boat ramp and kayak launch. Both parks offer licensefree fishing, but all fishing activities require registration through VA Fisherman Identification Program (FIP) at mrc.virginia.gov/fip or by calling 800-723-2728. Check with local bait & tackle shops for fishing license regulations regarding private piers, boats, surf fishing, and fishing tournaments.
Donald J. Leonard Park overlooks the Chincoteague Bay and is pet friendly, offers picnic tables for dining by the bay, kayak access, and rocket launch and sunset views.
ISLAND NATURE TRAIL
The trail offers two paths to leisurely enjoy Chincoteague’s nature. The south 0.7-mile paved trail is pet friendly and provides opportunities to walk, bike, run or bird-watch. To the north is a natural surface trail that extends 0.45 miles through pine forest and glade.
PET-FRIENDLY PARKS & TRAILS
Chincoteague Dog Park is located next to the Island Nature Trail and open dawn to dusk. Purchase a weekly or annual permit, with valid dog license and proof of vaccinations, from the Town Office or Police Department at 6150 Community Drive. Learn more at chincoteague-va.gov/recreation.
The southern 0.7-mile paved loop of the Island Nature Trail offers a leisurely walk or jog in the shade with pets on leashes, while Donald J. Leonard Park offers pet-friendly sunset viewing.
For the safety of your pet and the refuge’s wildlife, pets are prohibited on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore, Virginia, even in your vehicle.

The Walking & Biking Tour of Historic Chincoteague Island brochure offers a selfguided opportunity to discover the history of our downtown, neighborhoods and architecture at your own leisurely pace. Guided walking history tours and narrated bus tours are also available in season. The Museum of Chincoteague Island features changing exhibits celebrating our rich culture and seaside way of life. Visit the oldest home on the island dating back to the turn of the 19th century!

Fishing charters are also available with knowledgeable captains eager to take you to their favorite fishing spots both inland and offshore. Our waters offer the opportunity to catch a wide variety of fish throughout the season.
Fall and winter offer great opportunities for a well-deserved hunting getaway. Our hunting guides will bring you to secluded marsh blinds to hunt various species of duck while U.S. Fish and Wildlife offers permit hunting on Assateague and Wallops Islands for both white-tailed deer and sika elk.
